What is Rapid Tooling?

Rapid tooling is a process that combines advanced technologies, such as 3D printing, CNC machining, and other digital manufacturing methods, to quickly produce molds, dies, or tools. It is often used for creating prototype molds or low-volume production tools, allowing manufacturers to test designs, materials, and production processes before committing to full-scale production.

The speed and cost-effectiveness of rapid tooling make it ideal for industries like automotive, aerospace, and consumer goods, where fast product development cycles are crucial. By using rapid tooling, companies can quickly produce high-quality parts, reduce development time, and make design adjustments more easily. This method also enables the use of a variety of materials, including metals and plastics, which can closely replicate final production parts for testing and validation purposes.

The benefit of Rapid Tooling

Fast: Rapid tooling significantly reduces the time required to produce molds or tools compared to traditional methods. It allows manufacturers to quickly move from design to production, speeding up product development and time to market.

Precise: Rapid tooling offers high precision, typically achieving tolerances of +/- 0.03mm to +/- 0.02mm. This level of accuracy ensures that parts produced during prototyping or low-volume production closely match the final design, reducing errors and improving overall quality.

Cost-Effective: The use of rapid tooling lowers production costs by minimizing the need for expensive, time-consuming molds or tooling. It’s especially economical for low-volume production or prototyping, where traditional tooling methods may not be financially viable.

HOW IT WORKS

The Process of Rapid Tooling

Our customers from various industry such as electronics, consumer products, agriculture, automotive, robotic, etc.

Tool Design and Program

Grefit provides professional DFM report which explains the tool design and mold flow. Once the DFM is confirmed and approved by customer, we start to cut the tool and do CNC programming.

CNC Machine

The steel tool is made by CNC machine, including CNC milling, EDM cutting and wire-cutting. The tool consists of two main halves, cavity side and core side. Besides, we machine additional inserts for tooling components.

Fit Mold & Mold Trial

After CNC machining, it turns to fit and test the mold. Through this step, we will know if the tool is made to design and if it works as what we expected. Any problems then will switch to continuous tooling improvement and optimization.

Surface Treatment

Generally, at Grefit, surface treatment will be at the final step. This can help avoid surface damage and repeat job when the tool needs to be rework. Polishing and Mold Tech texture is widely pre-made on the tooling surface. It saves the time and cost.

COMMON QUESTIONS
